***UPDATE: 9/13/2008***
Dear Jehovah's Witnesses:
I can see that a couple of thousand hits have been generated by this blog being forwarded around in email. I've received emails from a few of you, and it appears that the larger point is lost on many. Since your faith doesn't get invovled in politics, I can understand why this might seem like I'm making fun of you, but I'm not. I'm making fun of Barack Obama.
Some of you have commented that you're offended I have edited an image of "You Can Live Forever in Paradise on Earth." Had I done that to the Bible, I might understand your concern. However, I edited a photograph of the book's cover--a book that is the work of men and, more specifically, the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society of New York. I haven't mocked your faith, nor have I attempted to ridicule it.
However, I pointed out that Sen. Barack Obama was talking about creating a kingdom here on Earth--something that seemed offensive to me on multiple levels and ought to be offensive to you since that's obviously part of your beliefs. You folks don't publish a volume of that book that announces it's written by "Sen. Barack H. Obama," nor does it claim to be from "DNC Publishing, LLC"--DNC standing for Democrat National Committee.
I used to be one of you. I get it. It's a swipe at Barack Obama. Not you.
Calm down.
Sincerely,
William Smith
One thing is for sure, Barack Obama sounds more like one of the Jehovah's Witnesses than he does a future President of the United States:
From CNN.com:
Republicans no longer have a firm grip on religion in political discourse, Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama told Sunday worshippers.
The senator from Illinois delivered his campaign message to a multiracial evangelical congregation in traditionally conservative Greenville, South Carolina. "I think it's important, particularly for those of us in the Democratic Party, to not cede values and faith to any one party," Obama told reporters outside the Redemption World Outreach Center where he attended services.
"I think that what you're seeing is a breaking down of the sharp divisions that existed maybe during the '90s," said Obama. "At least in politics, the perception was that the Democrats were fearful of talking about faith, and on the other hand you had the Republicans who had a particular brand of faith that oftentimes seemed intolerant or pushed people away."
[snip]
He finished his brief remarks by saying, "We're going to keep on praising together. I am confident that we can create a Kingdom right here on Earth."
That's right...a Kingdom on Earth where the United States Government runs everything, where there are confiscatory tax rates and where your government takes as much of your hard-earned dollar as it can. Barack's Kingdom looks more like a Socialist state every single day.
If he's elected, maybe we can rename the White House to the "Kingdom Hall of Barack Obama?"
