"Independent" Chris Matthews apparently is putting the Republicans on notice for this afternoon's Presidential Candidates debate on the economy. (CNBC, 4:00pm EDT, MSNBC replay at 9:00pm EDT)
Appearing this morning on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," host Joe Scarborough asked Matthews if the candidates would try to get some kind of soundbite out of his recent controversial remarks.
From Fishbowl DC:
I've been thinking about that....It's not my stage tonight. I don't have much standing to retort in real time.
However, I do have one sensitive point and that is, I don't mind being wrong -- I try to be right. I don't mind somebody saying I'm not fair -- I try to be fair. ... If someone says I'm not independent, it's going to be very hard for me to bite my tongue. ...
For twenty years I've paid the price of indepdendence. I've taken it from everybody ... every night of my life for the past twenty years. ...
If they accuse of me of being partisan, I'll go rip! ...
It's not about me, it's about them and who's going to be president during these difficult times.
It's not about him, but he'll "go rip." (Whatever that means.)
Matthews doesn't seem to understand that he's (a) not independent, (b) often wrong and (c) not very fair at all.
This GOP debate, the second to be moderated by Matthews, is not an episode of "Hardball" and Matthews doesn't seem to get that. He is the wrong choice to moderate a Fantasy Football draft, let alone a debate between contenders vying for the highest office in the land.
This debate--on CNBC, the business channel of the NBC family--should have been moderated by Ron Insana or someone who knows the slightest bit about the economy and business.
