Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) was arrested at the airport in Minneapolis for soliciting sex from an undercover (male) policeman...on June 11.
How the hell did this not make news for over two months? (I'll tell you how later.)
Craig now denies being gay and says that he only pled guilty in the hopes of "making it go away."
Uh-huh. I don't care.
He's not gay but he was hitting a guy up for sex in a known spot for solicitation. Maybe he's not gay...I don't know. Maybe he just likes sex with guys. (That's OK if he does...again, I really don't care.)
However, I'm finding it hard to believe he's not guilty. Sure...people get railroaded into plea deals all the time, but not United States Senators, thanks. People also take plea deals because they are guilty and did something wrong. Craig is right on one count: he took the plea to make it go away and his naivete made him think it actually would.
Nothing goes away in Washington.
As far as the timing, that's really not a mystery. Until today, Craig was associated with the Romney campaign. The timing of this definitely looks like another (futile) attempt to hurt the former Massachusetts Governor's presidential bid. (Craig resigned his post with the campaign today, as he should have done.)
Larry, your only "misjudgement" was in trying to get an undercover cop to fellate you in an airport bathroom. I don't care if you're gay or not, but it's about time you were honest.
At the very least, get a room already. That's what everyone else in Washington does.
