One more enviro-nugget today...
Well, we've all probably heard the song "Love Hurts" from the band Nazareth in the 1970's. Little did we know, that tokens of our love might be hurting the environment.
I wish I were making this up.
From the Telegraph:
The Valentine's Day bouquet -- the gift that every woman in Britain will be waiting for next week -- has become the latest bĂȘte noire among environmental campaigners.
...
Environmentalists warned that "flower miles" could have serious implications on climate change in terms of carbon dioxide emissions from aeroplanes.
Andrew Sims, the policy director of the New Economics Foundation, said: "There are plenty of flowers that grow in Britain in the winter and don't need to be hothoused. Air freighting flowers half way round the world contributes to global warming."
< sarcasm >
In short, the blossoms you're buyin' your baby might be causing climatological doom. As if there weren't enough pressure to get the right thing for Valentine's Day already!
Fret not, gentlemen. You now have your rationale (and perhaps defense) for visiting the fine establishment known as Victoria's Secret. I mean, why buy flowers--which last for a couple of weeks tops--when you can save the environment with lingerie?!?!
I'd really like to thank Andrew Sims for bringing this important and critical issue to the attention of the world.
