He's Kidding Us...Right?

As I've been many times before, I'm officially annoyed with President George W. Bush.

Harriet Miers?

HARRIET MIERS?!?!

I'm beside myself. I'm bordering on apoplexy. I'm furious. I'm...well...I'm damned good and angry, that's what I am.

I've read some of the reactions online in the media and from my fellow bloggers and, I'm sorry, but I'm not buying it. I can't accept at face value that Bush knows what he's doing with this pick and that we should trust him blindly. It's my job and my duty to question the Government and, specifically, my President. Even I have to admit I'm horrified by this pick.

This pick--for the vacancy created by the retirement of Sandra Day O'Connor--makes me think that Roberts was a decent pick after all. I wasn't all that thrilled by Roberts and I was openly discouraged that the President used that pick to fill the Rehnquist vacancy. I guess I should thank my lucky stars that he didn't nominate Harriet Miers as Chief Justice.

I'm not bothered that she's never been a judge. That's not a requirement to be nominated to the Supreme Court.

I'm not even bothered by the fact that this pick could be labeled as a "back scratcher" or as "cronyism"---even though such a charge would be patently false. Why do I say it's false? Well, perhaps it has something to do with Harriet Miers having donated money to both Al Gore and Lloyd Bentsen. The worst thing she's guilty of there is not being able to make up her mind and playing both sides, perhaps.

I'm not even bothered so much by the fact that Harriet Miers was described as a "conservative Democrat."

What really scares me is that Harry Reid supports her nomination to the highest court in the land. That alone, my friends, should be a "red alert--shields up" moment for all of us. Any time that hypocrite Harry Reid can stand up and say he agrees with the President...well...we should all be afraid.

I seriously question this nomination and the judgment of President Bush. He got it 100% wrong.

OK...I can hear the die hard Bush supporters now. "We've got to trust Bush," and all that. I've heard it before. The problem is, the President doesn't send the VP out onto major talk radio shows to defend the choice unless he knows he's going to have a problem with the base.

Dick Cheney was on with both Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity today to talk about the Miers pick. There are two words that describe that kind of tactic where I come from, friends...

Damage control.

I was worried about John Roberts being a David Souter-like pick, and I should have been worried about how this nomination could have been even worse.

It is far worse and we're going to have to deal with it for as long as Miers serves on the court. Like Roberts, she will be confirmed.

You've got a lot of explaining to do, Mr. President. A lot of explaining.
