Conservative Blogger: What's in a Name?...
Apparently, nothing, if you're a Democrat.
From the Military Times:
The House Armed Services Committee is banishing the global war on terror from the 2008 defense budget.
This is not because the war has been won, lost or even called off, but because the committee's Democratic leadership doesn't like the phrase.
A memo for the committee staff, circulated March 27, says the 2008 bill and its accompanying explanatory report that will set defense policy should be specific about military operations and "avoid using colloquialisms."
They don't like the phrase "Global War on Terror?!?!?"
Let me let you in on a little secret they're keeping from you: it's not the phrase they don't like...it's the action itself. If they had their way, it would be called the "Earth-Wide Aggression Against Those America Has Oppressed, Insulted and Otherwise Offended Over Time."
Absolutely ridiculous.
I keep going back to the whole "if it looks like a duck" thing. Our troops are engaged in a war on terrorism that spans the globe. We might as well call it such.
However, the Democrat Leadership doesn't want to engage in the use of colloquialisms.
Fine.
I say the next colloquialism they should do away with is the phrase "Democrat Leadership" since, given the criteria they cite, there doesn't seem to be anything to back that up, either.
