Conservative Blogger: Not Ready to Make Sense...
One would think that the Dixie Chicks--and Natalie Maines in particular--would learn to stick to their day jobs.
Telegraph | Entertainment | How the Chicks survived their scrap with Bush
You know, I don't care if they have political views. I really don't. This is America and the Chicks are free to say whatever the hell they want. I am, however, tired of their whining because people are upset with them. The Dixie Chicks are upset because the people who listen to them, go to their concerts and buy their albums don't like what they have to say.
Put simply, one of country music's biggest acts has no idea who their core demographic is.
It's not that they survived their scrap with George W. Bush--that's irrelevant. It's that they're barely surviving their dissonance with country fans. What's worse, they don't understand what patriotism is about:
"The entire country may disagree with me, but I don't understand the necessity for patriotism," Maines resumes, through gritted teeth. "Why do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why? You can like where you live and like your life, but as for loving the whole country… I don't see why people care about patriotism."
Based on quotes like that, I can see why people don't care about the Dixie Chicks. Their disdain isn't restricted to their fans, however...
The Chicks can't hide their disgust at the lack of support they received from other country performers. "A lot of artists cashed in on being against what we said or what we stood for because that was promoting their career, which was a horrible thing to do," says Robison. "A lot of pandering started going on, and you'd see soldiers and the American flag in every video. It became a sickening display of ultra-patriotism."
Citing slow ticket sales, the Dixie Chicks have headed north of the border to Canadia to try to put some butts in seats. It sounds like they might feel a little more at home anywhere other than the United States right about now.
The way I see it, let the Dixie Chicks say whatever they want because the only people it's hurting is them. We live in a capitalist society and the consumers of their music are voicing their opinion the only way they can--by choosing to spend their money somewhere else. These ladies haven't been wronged despite what they say. They've been sent a message and--unfortunately for them--they're not savvy enough to understand what it is.
Either way, The Dixie Chicks might do well to consider what living in America means to them and how the sacrifice of patriots enables them to be as ignorant as they want to be. The only "wide open spaces" here are the ones between their ears.
